It is said that the principal mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on Madeira Island, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that reached Europe, where it was regarded as highly refined and even used as perfume for the ladies of the court.
