Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island from which it gets its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira Island, the vineyards are grown in small plots of earth known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on the slopes of the mountains, which are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to the unrivalled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used for producing this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
