At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo region with the aim of entering the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional winery and a distillery, which still today produces Mouchão Brandy. Today, the estate remains managed and worked by the descendants of the original family, and the entire vinification process has remained practically unchanged, preserving hand‑harvest and fermentation in stone vats with foot‑pressing. It is these techniques and the long‑standing success story of Herdade do Mouchão that keep this wine estate so reminiscent of how wines were made in earlier days. (image merely illustrative)
