Niepoort – A limited‑edition release of only 100 bottles, with identity, imagery and production signed by Omdesign, entirely inspired by Dirk Niepoort, one of the most iconic and charismatic ambassadors of Port wine. The box, crafted from oak wood with screen‑printed “Rolf & The Collectors” elements, resembles an old toolbox. Inside, a bottle sits among four hand‑painted tiles that together display the famous phrase “You can, however you wish!”, a line commonly used by Dirk. The cork’s stem was designed to double as a coaster. A booklet invites you to explore the essence of the project. Also included is an exclusive wooden cutting board with a green leather handle and a numbered knife, embodying the concept of a “Vintage with the knife in the teeth.” The key chosen by Dirk to open this edition pays homage to his father, Rolf, a lifelong collector of various objects, especially keys – replicated in this release. The numbered label is a unique, innovative piece that embraces the original screen‑printed Niepoort Bioma Vintage Vinha da Pisca 2017 bottle. Inside, a small comic strip illustrates Dirk and his father’s key corridor, which can be detached and used, for example, as a postcard. Each label features a cheeky image, reinforced by molded embossing and stamping, and is hand‑applied with resin medals as a tribute to the six generations of the Niepoort family, inspired by the founder’s symbol, the basis of the Niepoort logo. Inside, a superior Vintage Port that not only respects the terroir but also transports us back to the golden age of Port wine. At the heart of the Bioma Vintage “Vinha da Pisca” concept is a very special vineyard, located in a unique spot in the Douro region. We aim to offer, through small productions, an old‑fashioned way of vinifying a Vintage, similar to the 1970s and earlier Vintage Ports, bottled in England. The exceptional quality of the grapes from the old vines of Vinha da Pisca seems to express its sense of “place” magnificently, when we apply the “logic” of other times. Vinification: The 2017 vintage is remembered for intense heat and historically low rainfall, but the harvest, at the perfect moment of ripening, allowed the grapes to be received in ideal conditions with fantastic natural acidity. All the bunches from the Bioma Vintage were hand‑crushed in our Port wine vinification centre in Vale de Mendiz. After fortification with grape brandy, the Port was stabilised over winter. In spring, the wine was transferred to a cooler section of the Nápoles estate cellar and placed in 550‑liter traditional vats. By ageing this Port in fresh vats in the Douro region instead of large tanks in Gaia and bottling the Bioma “Vinha da Pisca” three years after harvest, we achieved an exceptionally complex wine. Curiously, this is how it was done in the “good old days”, when wines were shipped in vats to England and bottled later.
