Niepoort – a limited edition of only 100 units, crafted with identity, imagery and production signed by Omdesign, fully inspired by Dirk Niepoort, one of the most emblematic and charismatic ambassadors of Port wine. The oak‑wood box, screen‑printed with “Rolf & The Collectors”, evokes an old toolbox. Inside is a bottle, four hand‑painted tiles that together display the famous phrase “You can, as you wish!” – a line often used by Dirk – and the cork has been designed to double as a coaster. It also comes with a leaflet inviting you to explore the essence of this project. Specially conceived for this packaging, there is an exclusive wooden board with a green leather handle and a numbered knife, embodying the idea of a “Vintage with the knife in the teeth”. The key chosen by Dirk to open the box pays tribute to his father, Rolf, an avid collector of many objects, especially keys, one of which is replicated in this edition. The numbered label is a unique, innovative piece that embraces the original screen‑printed bottle of the Niepoort Bioma Vintage Vinha da Pisca 2017. Inside, a small comic illustrates Dirk and his father’s key corridor, which can be detached and used as a postcard. Each label features a cheeky image, reinforced by molded relief and stamped leaf, applied manually with resin medals in homage to the six generations of the Niepoort family, inspired by the founder’s symbol at the base of the Niepoort logo. Inside, an excellent Vintage Port that not only respects the terroir but also takes us back to the golden age of Port wine. At the heart of the Bioma Vintage “Vinha da Pisca” concept lies a very special vineyard in a very distinctive location in the Douro region. We aim to offer, with small productions, an old-fashioned way of vinifying a Vintage, similar to 1970 and earlier Vintage Ports, bottled in England. The exceptional quality of the old vines from Vinha da Pisca seems to express its sense of place magnificently when we apply the “logic” of earlier times. Vinification: the 2017 vintage was remembered for intense heat and historically low rainfall, but the harvest at the perfect maturation point allowed the grapes to be received in ideal conditions with fantastic natural acidity. All the clusters of the Bioma Vintage were hand‑crushed at our Port winery centre in Vale de Mendiz. After fortification with wine brandy, the Port was stabilised over the winter. In spring, the wine was transferred to a cooler part of the Quinta de Nápoles cellar and put into traditional 550‑l barrels. By ageing this Port in barrels in a cool cellar in the Douro region, rather than large vats in Gaia, and bottling the Bioma “Vinha da Pisca” in the third year after harvest, we produced an exceptionally complex wine. Curiously, that is how it was done in the “good old times”, when wines were shipped in barrels to England and bottled later.
