Quinta Nova was at Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo where the first monovarietal planting study took place in the Douro region. Between 1979 and 1981, in collaboration with the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture, through the Center for Viticultural Studies of the Douro, the best solar exposures for planting three varieties – Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca – were selected at Quinta Nova. Plot 28, planted with Tinta Roriz, sits at an altitude between 205 and 210 metres. This variety showcases the viticultural challenge and human perseverance in preserving an old and authentic Douro. The austerity of the grape is evident on the palate, yet we are seduced by a somewhat contemporary sophistication, combined with the century‑old vines (Plot 21), producing a batch that reveals a reference in Portuguese Douro: a wine full of minerality, blue fruit, rich in spicy notes, with a firm structure and a narrow palate. High concentration, density, and depth clearly reflect its origin. A red wine crafted by winemaker Jorge Alves, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
