However, a new era of excellence began in 1996 when Cristiano van Zeller acquired the family property from his wife, Joana Lemos van Zeller. Over more than two decades, Cristiano has led a dedicated and passionate effort, creating unique wines of recognized quality both in Portugal and abroad. The acquisition of Quinta Vale D. Maria by the Aveleda group in 2017 represents the continuation of this legacy, adding a long‑term vision focused on excellence and sustainability. This philosophy is based on a passion for every detail, starting with the hand‑picking of the finest bunches, followed by the use of traditional vinification methods, and culminating in the careful selection of the best French oak barrels.
