However, a new era of excellence began in 1996 when Cristiano van Zeller acquired the family property from his wife, Joana Lemos van Zeller. Over more than two decades, Cristiano has led a dedicated and passionate effort, crafting unique wines of recognized quality both in Portugal and abroad. The acquisition of Quinta Vale D. Maria by the Aveleda group in 2017 continues this legacy, adding a long‑term vision focused on excellence and sustainability. This philosophy is rooted in a passion for every detail, starting with hand‑selecting the best bunches, employing traditional vinification methods, and concluding with careful selection of the finest French oak barrels.
