This Rocas de Seña is a delightfully perplexing creation, utterly dictated by the valley’s volcanic bedrock. The Syrah and Grenache – sourced from another Chadwick estate – inject a refreshing youthfulness and an elegance that makes you wonder if this vineyard is, in essence, a miniature Mediterranean garden. The 2021 vintage was a playful one for the producer, but the result is a wine boasting remarkably pure aromas and tannins so incredibly smooth you almost forgive the slight climatic unpredictability. With 22 months aging, primarily in new French oak, and a curiously evocative “egg-cement” influence, this 96/100 James Suckling wine is a superb pairing with a hearty beef dish, or simply to lose yourself in its complex expressiveness.
