The Alvarinho variety remained in the Melgaço region for years, with vines traditionally planted along the fields’ edges while cereals occupied the plots’ centers. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous Alvarinho vineyard in Melgaço, naming it "Soalheiro" because of its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, it is the third generation continuing the legacy, expanding the vision to organic production. (Illustrative image only)
