The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for years, with vines traditionally planted along the edges of fields while cereals filled the centre of the plots. In 1974 João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, broke this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, baptising it “Soalheiro” for its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit shaped the family’s history, which has since been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today the third generation carries on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (illustrative image)
