The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally vines were planted along the field edges while cereals occupied the centre of the plots. In 1974 João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, baptising it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been tied to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today the third generation continues the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (image purely illustrative)
