The Alvarinho variety has been grown in the Melgaço region for years, with vines traditionally planted along field margins while cereals took the centre of the plots. In 1974 João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, broke that tradition and planted the first continuous Alvarinho vineyard in Melgaço, christening it “Soalheiro” for its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit has defined the family’s history, which has long been tied to Alvarinho production in Melgaço.
