The Alvarinho variety remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally vines were planted along the field margins, with cereals occupying the centre of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous Alvarinho vineyard in Melgaço, which was christened “Soalheiro” because of its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been linked to the production of Alvarinho in Melgaço. Today it is the third generation carrying on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (illustrative image only)
