The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vines were planted along the field edges, with cereals occupying the centre of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous Alvarinho block in Melgaço, baptised "Soalheiro" because of its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been tied to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, it is the third generation that carries on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (illustrative image only)
