The Alvarinho grape remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vines were planted along the edges of the fields, with cereals occupying the centre of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break with this tradition and planted the first continuous vineyard of Alvarinho in Melgaço, which was named "Soalheiro," owing to its sun-drenched exposure. João António's pioneering spirit has shaped the history of the family, which has been dedicated to producing Alvarinho in Melgaço ever since. Today, the third generation carries on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production.
