The Azores Wine Company was founded on April 3, 2014 by partners António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha, and Insula Vinus Lda. Working together, sharing friendship, and holding a common vision to restore the former prestige of the Azores—particularly the island of Pico—motivated them to launch a new venture. Thus Azores Wine Company emerged, and by 2014 it was already producing around 10,000 bottles. The single‑varietal whites Arinto dos Açores and Verdelho O Original from the Rare Grapes Collection make up more than half of the output. The red and rosé wines from the Volcanic Series also offer surprising quality. The company’s history also includes the first sparkling wine of the Azores, produced in 2011 as part of Pico’s Terrantez project, and by 2014 the first sparkling wine from Pico made from the Arinto dos Açores grape. Finally, work is underway on fortified wines, aiming to revive the famous Pico wines that have journeyed around the world for more than 400 years. (illustrative image only)
