Lisboa

About this region

Lisboa stretches along the Atlantic north of the capital and is one of Portugal's most diverse wine regions, with nine DOC sub-regions in close proximity — among them historic Bucelas (Arinto whites), Carcavelos (fortified) and the sandy, pre-phylloxera vineyards of Colares. Ocean breezes keep wines fresh and lean even in warm years, and the recent renaissance has elevated Lisboa's Alenquer and Óbidos zones into serious sources of structured, mid-weight reds and crisp whites. Castelão, Aragonez and Touriga Nacional lead the reds; Arinto, Fernão Pires and Vital the whites. Increasingly, this is where Lisbon's most ambitious producers source for value.
