Óbidos

About this region

Part of the larger Lisboa region, the Óbidos DOC sits just inland from the Atlantic on limestone-rich soils. Cooled by ocean breezes, it produces fresh, vibrant whites — Arinto and Fernão Pires excel here — and lighter, savoury reds from Castelão and Tinta Miúda. Traditional-method sparkling wines have also emerged as a strength, taking advantage of the natural acidity that the maritime climate provides. The region is small, low-yielding by Portuguese standards, and increasingly the source of refined, food-friendly wines with strong value.
