Trás-Os-Montes

About this region

The mountainous, sparsely populated northeast of Portugal, Trás-os-Montes is a continental wine region of granitic and schistous soils at elevations that often exceed 500 m. Its three DOC sub-regions — Chaves, Valpaços and Planalto Mirandês — produce robust reds from Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Bastardo, and surprisingly fresh whites from Síria and Fernão Pires. The harsh climate, cold winters and big diurnal swings give the wines natural acidity and structure. Long overshadowed by neighbouring Douro, Trás-os-Montes is increasingly recognised as a source of distinctive, characterful Portuguese wines at compelling prices.
