Ramisco is the historic red grape of Colares, planted on phylloxera-resistant sandy dunes between Sintra and the Atlantic. The vines grow ungrafted, rooted directly in deep sand, an exceptionally rare survival in modern viticulture. Wines are pale, tannic, lean, salty and unmistakably maritime, with extraordinary ageing capacity — Colares Ramiscos from the mid-20th century are still vibrant. Production is tiny and prized.
