Jose Maria da Fonseca is closely linked to Moscatel de Setúbal, almost becoming a synonym for this great wine from the Setúbal region. In fact, some of the world’s finest moscatels are born from this old family enterprise. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by José Maria da Fonseca, a mathematics graduate from the University of Coimbra. Fifteen years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was created. While JMF is best known for its Moscatels, it also produces timeless table wines such as Periquita (1850) and Lancers (1944). JMF’s moscatels are rare relics released sparingly, making them a must-visit. The oldest moscatels in the region belong exclusively to this company and are unforgettable, rivaling the world’s finest fortified wines like Port and Madeira.
