It is said that Madeira wine’s main mentor was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that included Europe, where it was considered highly refined, even used as a perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it abound in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not match the image shown. (illustrative image only)
