This Mariposa Reserva from the Dão certainly appears to have had a rather dramatic youth. Hand-harvested with meticulous vine selection, it’s clear they’re serious about quality, isn’t it? Following a traditional granite fermentation with foot treading – no doubt leaving the grapes a little shaken – it spends a year in French oak, said to mellow its initial expression. The result is a wine of rich colour, boasting a complex aroma of wild berries and spices, heavily influenced by the Touriga Nacional, and with firm tannins that, apparently, gain a silky texture in the oak. Wonderful with a good roasted duck or perhaps a classic arroz de pato.
