Description

The history of Madeira Wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years after its discovery. On the island of Madeira, vines are grown in small plots of earth known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on mountain slopes that are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to Madeira Wine’s unparalleled distinction over time. Beyond these factors, 30 varieties are highlighted for producing this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
