Quinta do Vallado The name of this wine comes from the vineyard it comes from – Vinha da Coroa – located on the top of a hill, like a crown. It is an old vineyard, planted in 1958, with a north exposure and a blend of more than twenty grape varieties (field blend). 2022 was one of the hottest and driest years on record (since 1931). After a winter of extremely low rainfall, an abnormal spring followed, with very high temperatures and continued precipitation below average. May and July were the hottest months on record in continental Portugal, and the very dry, hot weather extended into August and September. The harvest was long and heterogeneous, with significant production breaks in the driest sites and poor soils, and good production in the cooler areas of the Douro, such as Baixo‑Corgo. In this climatic context of great diversity and severity, the vine cycle was not linear. It started late due to the cold winter, but later, with the limited water available and the spring heat, it approached normal. In locations where water stress was more pronounced – sites with thin and poorer soils – from July onward there was even a halt in growth, and grape ripening advanced with great difficulty. Conversely, in richer and cooler sites, although the vine ceased vegetative development due to drought and heat waves, there was great adaptive capacity and eventually grape ripening completed, resulting in surprisingly good production despite the year's adversity. Winemaking: After a hand harvest, the grapes are split into two lots. 50 % are placed in stainless‑steel vats with cap contact and without crushing, undergoing a carbonic maceration followed by fermentation for 14 days. The remaining 50 % are crushed and destemmed, also fermenting for 14 days in stainless‑steel vats. After this 14‑day fermentation with very low extraction, the wine ages for approximately 18 to 24 months in second‑year French oak barrels.
