The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for many years, and traditionally vines were planted along the edges of the fields while cereals filled the centre of the plots. In 1974 João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break that tradition and planted the first continuous block of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, baptising it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit shaped the family’s history, and since then they have been devoted to producing Alvarinho in Melgaço. Today the third generation carries on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (Illustrative image only)
