Alvarinho vines had remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vineyards were planted along the edges of the fields, with grains occupying the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho in Melgaço, baptizing it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, and since then the family has been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today it is the third generation that carries on the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (Illustrative image only)
