The Alvarinho grape remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vines were planted along the edges of the fields, with cereals occupying the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, naming it “Soalheiro” because of its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, and since then the family has been involved in producing Alvarinho in Melgaço. Today it is the third generation that continues the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (illustrative image only)
