Alves de Sousa is a family-owned wine house with a long history in the Douro and has been one of the most influential names in the region's shift from Port wine to high-quality table wines. The company is managed by the fifth generation of the family, with Domingos Alves de Sousa, considered a pioneer of the modern Douro, and his son Tiago, who is the head winemaker. The Production Philosophy Family Tradition: The Alves de Sousa family has a tradition of over 5 generations in wine production, working exclusively with grapes from their own estates. Shift to Table Wines: In the early 1990s, Domingos Alves de Sousa was one of the few to champion the shift in focus from Port wine to quality table wines, which earned him recognition as a pioneer of the modern Douro. Respect for the Vineyard: Production is guided by respect for the unique characteristics of each vineyard plot, seeking to express its character in the wines. Sustainability: The winery and the vineyards are integrated into the Douro landscape, with a strong commitment to sustainability. Key Estates and Wines Alves de Sousa owns 120 hectares of vineyards spread across six estates in the Douro, which allows for great diversification in production. The brand has a vast portfolio that includes red, white, and Port wines: Quinta da Gaivosa: This is one of the family's most emblematic estates, located in the heart of Cima Corgo. The Quinta da Gaivosa Tinto, sourced from old vines around 60 to 90 years old, is one of the house's benchmarks. Douro Wines: The range includes wines such as the Domingos Alves de Sousa Reserva Pessoal, awarded Best Red Wine of the Year, the Alves de Sousa Branco da Gaivosa, and the Gaivosa Primeiros Anos. Port Wines: Alves de Sousa has returned to producing Port wines, vinifying a small portion of the grapes and seeking its own style within the different categories. Recognition and Awards Producer of the Year: Domingos Alves de Sousa was named Producer of the Year by Portugal's Revista de Vinhos in 1999 and 2006, being the first person in history to receive the distinction twice. Architecture Awards: The Quinta da Gaivosa winery has been recognized with several architecture and wine tourism awards.
