Tejo

About this region

The Tejo region, nestled in the heart of Portugal, owes its very existence to the mighty Tejo River – a constant influence on its landscape, climate, and a legacy stretching back to Roman times. Formerly known as Ribatejo, this is one of Portugal’s oldest wine-producing areas, boasting a remarkable diversity of terroirs – the Bairro, Charneca, and Campo zones – each with distinct geological and climatic nuances that shape the character of the wines. The region’s mild climate yields wines known for their balance and fruity expression, predominantly crafted with local gems like Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, and Fernão Pires, often complemented by international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Certified by the CVR Tejo, these wines carry the coveted Denominação de Origem do Tejo and Indicação Geográfica Tejo, reflecting a commitment to both traditional practices – think foot-treading and communal harvests – and modern winemaking techniques. Expect vibrant, approachable wines perfect alongside grilled seafood or roasted chicken.
