Aragonez

About this grape variety

The Portuguese name for Tempranillo as it's planted south of the Mondego — principally in the Alentejo, where it is widely used. Aragonez is early-ripening, sugar-rich and contributes dark colour, ripe red and black fruit, and moderate tannin to Alentejo blends with Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet. The grape thrives in the region's warm climate but needs management to retain acidity; old-vine bottlings can be remarkable. Same grape as Tinta Roriz of the Douro and Dão.
