The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for years, with vines traditionally planted along the edges of fields, while cereals occupied the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous block of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, which was christened “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, the third generation carries on the legacy, expanding the vision to organic production. (Illustrative image)
