Bairrada

About this region

Bairrada hugs the Atlantic between Coimbra and Aveiro on clay-limestone soils that shape its identity. The dark-skinned, late-ripening Baga is the region's signature: structured, naturally acidic, ageworthy reds that have been compared to Nebbiolo. Bairrada is also one of Portugal's great sparkling-wine origins, with traditional-method bubbles produced for over a century. The white grape Maria Gomes (Fernão Pires) provides crisp, citrussy whites. Producers such as Luis Pato and Filipa Pato have made the region a benchmark for classical, terroir-driven Portuguese wines.
