Burgundy

About this region

Burgundy is the world's most fragmented and terroir-obsessed fine-wine region: 84 distinct AOCs divided into climats — individual parcels often less than a hectare each, mapped over centuries. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate, producing some of the most coveted reds and whites on earth from the limestone slopes of the Côte d'Or, plus celebrated whites in Chablis to the north and lively wines in the Mâconnais to the south. The pyramidal hierarchy runs Bourgogne → Village → Premier Cru → Grand Cru, with each Grand Cru parcel revered for its specific terroir signature. Pricing reflects scarcity: total production is roughly a fifth of Bordeaux's.
