Verdelho

About this grape variety

One of Madeira's four noble white varieties, Verdelho produces medium-sweet fortifieds with naturally high acidity, smoky-mineral character and citrus-dried-fruit aromatics. The grape ripens later than Sercial but earlier than Bual, sitting mid-spectrum on the Madeira sweetness ladder. Verdelho is also planted on the mainland (notably in the Azores) where it makes electrifying dry whites of saline tension. The same grape, in California and Australia, sometimes produces fragrant dry table whites.
