Vinhão

About this grape variety

The principal red grape of Vinho Verde, Vinhão (known as Sousão in Douro) produces deeply coloured, juicy, naturally high-acid reds traditionally drunk young in clay tigelas. Its trademark is purplish foam on the rim of the glass; flavours are sharp red fruit with an almost lactic tang. Long the everyday wine of the Minho, Vinhão is being reimagined by serious producers into structured single-vineyard reds with surprising aging potential. In Douro, as Sousão, it adds colour and acidity to Port blends.
