This Duquesa Maria certainly appears to have had a challenging vintage, doesn’t it? The excessive rainfall at the start of the year – three times the 2019 average – clearly had a significant impact, delaying flowering and accelerating the vegetative cycle. Following a scorching, dry summer which reduced yields by 40% (with Touriga Nacional particularly affected), the winemaking, focused on gentle extraction and short maceration, feels like a hopeful response to a wine that seemingly battled against the elements. It pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats – perhaps some spareribs.
