Dão

About this region

Often called "the Portuguese Burgundy" for its elegance and finesse, Dão sits inland in north-central Portugal on granitic and schistous soils at altitude. Continental climate, surrounding mountain ranges that shelter the vineyards, and Touriga Nacional at its absolute best yield reds with vibrant acidity, fine tannin and remarkable ageing potential. The whites, principally Encruzado, are among Portugal's most age-worthy and mineral. A new generation of producers has redefined Dão since the 2000s, emphasising single-quinta bottlings and lighter, more transparent winemaking.
